MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) – A woman facing charges of child neglect for ignoring medical treatment for her infant has waived her preliminary hearing.
Online court records indicate that Katrina Blasing of Wausaukee will stand trial. She will be arraigned in Marinette County court March 5.
Blasing’s 4-month-old son suffered extensive injuries while in the care of Ryan Lenz. Lenz is also charged with child neglect, and will be in court March 10 for his preliminary hearing.
However, neither Blasing, Lenz nor anyone else is charged with actually causing the abuse.
Blasing left the child with a friend in the Town of Stephenson while she went with a friend and the friend’s grandmother to Milwaukee, according to the criminal complaint.
At the time, Lenz was at the house and watching the child. He noticed the baby was injured and called Blasing, who told him to wait until she returned. Prosecutors say Lenz cared for the baby and called Blasing several times to ask if the child should be taken to the hospital. The complaint states that each time, Blasing said to wait until she got back.
Several hours after Lenz first noticed the injuries, Blasing called 911 for medical help. It remains unknown who actually abused the baby.
The complaint goes on to reveal that doctors found the child had severe injuries including fractures to his skull and other parts of his body, brain injuries and bite marks. Doctors said some of the injuries were fresh, but some were old.
Doctors also said the injuries were unlikely to be caused by normal household accidents; they more likely resulted from the baby being slammed, shaken or thrown.
