MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – If you’re in a union or a working family, at least one group of highly paid athletes feels your pain.
The National Football League Players’ Association came out Tuesday against Wisconsin’s right-to-work bill.
Union director DeMaurice Smith says his group “stands together” with Wisconsin’s working families and organized labor in what he called “current attacks against their right to stand together as a team.”
The right-to-work bill would ban employers from forcing workers to either join unions or pay union dues.
Smith said the bill would jeopardize the livelihoods of food and commercial workers at Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. The NFL players’ chief said, “Governor Scott Walker may not value these vital employees — but as union members, we do.”
Smith said football players know first hand how banding together can “overcome decades of poor workplace conditions, and drastically improve pensions and benefits.”
A state Senate committee endorsed the right-to-work bill Tuesday evening. The full Senate takes it up Wednesday.
