UNDATED (WSAU-Wheeler) Some Wisconsin road construction companies are wondering if the state will put aside some transportation projects to hold down the debt. Nearly 20 cents of ever dollar in the state’s road fund will be used to pay off loans for road projects this year. Governor Scott Walker’s latest budget plan includes another $1.3-billion in borrowing this time.
Wisconsin’s debt load for road projects has tripled since 1999.
Since federal revenue from gas taxes has been flat in recent years, additional help from Washington isn’t likely.
Walker campaigned on reducing state debt and he has slowed its growth since taking office.
