WAUTOMA, Wis. (WSAU) — Officials in Waushara County say the fatal shooting of a hunter last month was accidental.
Sheriff Jeffrey Nett says 56-year-old Gregory Welk of Wild Rose died after being shot by another hunter who was firing at a moving deer. Welk was able to call 911 and his wife for help. He died at a Neenah hospital a short time later.
Nett says the person who fired the shots is a 23-year-old man from Oshkosh. That man was over 150 yards away from Welk on public land nearby to Welk’s property and fired through an area with heavy foliage. He does not believe any foul play was involved. “No evidence exists that the event was intentional or criminal in nature. There will be no criminal charges.”
The man who fired those shots has not been identified.
