HANCOCK, Wis. (WSAU) — The cropduster that died when his plane crashed yesterday has been identified. He was 38-year-old Robert Dopp of Beldenville. Waushara County Sheriff’s deputies say Dopp died at the scene when his Weatherly 620-B airplane went down in a wooded area near the potato fields he was spraying.
The Weatherly aircraft are built for this type of duty, and are popular among cropdusting companies.
The Federal Aviation Administration is on the scene investigating the cause of the crash.
Waushara County Sheriff Jeff Nett says emergency crews had to go through a decontamination process after working at the site becaue of the chemicals on the plane used for spraying potatoes. The Weatherly aircraft is capable of carrying 355 gallons or up to 2,970 pounds of liquid agricultural chemicals. It’s not known how much of the spray was still in the reservoir when the plane crashed. Nett says the chemical spill has prompted them to call the Department of Natural Resources in to evaluate the spill.
