STEVENS POINT, WI (WTAQ) – Two birds have tested positive for the West Nile Virus in Portage County, according to the health department Monday.
Authorities say a blue jay and a crow tested positive for the disease. These are the first birds to test positive in the area for West Nile in 2015.
West Nile Virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, which get the virus by feeding on infected birds.
People are asked to take extra precautions when spending time outside, by using insect repellent, and keeping areas around their homes free of stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.
