MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Car sharing services would get a boost in Wisconsin under a bill being considered at the state Capitol.
Republican State Representative Tyler August has introduced a bill to allow local municipalities or the state Department of Transportation to negotiate with car sharing companies to use street parking spaces for their services.
Madison already has Community Car and Zipcar offering services in the city. Both of those services allow users to check out a car from a specific parking space and return it to that space when they are finished.
But new services like Car2Go, which currently operates in 14 cities nationwide and 30 worldwide, have users find a car via a smartphone app, drive the car to their destination, and simply leave the car in any street parking spot available.
In Wisconsin, that process is currently not allowed under state law. However August believes there is a market for the service, and Madison officials say they have been contacted by Car2Go.
The bill was introduced this week in the Legislature and would likely be considered later this fall.
