DOOR COUNTY, Wis (WSAU-Wheeler News) One of Wisconsin’s best-known tourist spots is hit the hardest, after wind-and-hail storms roared through the state Sundday.
About 7,500 Door County electric customers were still without power at 4:15 a.m. Monday. They were among almost 13,000 homes and businesses in the dark overnight in eastern Wisconsin.
Winds of up to 70 miles an hour took down numerous trees in Door, Marinette, and Sheboygan counties.
The National Weather Service said a 32-foot sailboat capsized a mile off Sister Bay in the Bay of Green Bay, and the Coast Guard rescued the passengers.
Large hail struck virtually all regions of Wisconsin. Pensaukee in Oconto County had softball-sized hail, three-and-a-half inches in diameter. Three-inch hail was also reported in Sawyer and Racine counties. Lightning started a house on fire at Suamico, north of Green Bay.
Clear to partly cloudy skies are forecast for Monday, with highs from the 70s to the low 80s.
