UNDATED (WSAU-Wheeler News) Democrats are returning campaign money they received from recently-indicted U-S Senator Robert Menendez. However, Wisconsin’s Tammy Baldwin is not among them — not for now, anyway.
A spokesman said Baldwin will donate the same amount it received, $5,000, if Menendez is convicted — but for now, he’s innocent until proven guilty, like all other defendants.
Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, was indicted for bribery this month. He’s accused of using his Senate office to promote business activities for a friend and campaign donor in exchange for luxury vacations and golf outings. Menendez is fighting the allegations, which Baldwin agrees are serious.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said the defendant’s leadership committee, New Millennium, donated to Baldwin’s 2012 campaign in which she defeated former Governor Tommy Thompson.
Menendez also gave $5,000 to former U-S Senate Democrat Russ Feingold, for his 2010 campaign in which he lost to Republican Ron Johnson. Feingold has not said what he would do with the Menendez donation. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill has returned $10,000 she received from the Menendez group in 2010.
