(WNFL)- Milwaukee Brewers’ second baseman Scooter Gennett was put on the 15-day disabled list today. That’s after he slashed the lower middle finger of his left hand in a freak shower accident after Sunday’s loss at Pittsburgh. Utility player Elian Herrera was called up from Triple-“A” Colorado Springs to take Gennett’s roster spot. To make room for Herrera on the 40-man roster, reliever Brandon Kintzler — who started the season at Triple-“A” was designated for assignment. Meanwhile, the Brewers also called up catcher Juan Centeno from Colorado Springs. He’ll take Jonathan Lucroy’s roster spot, after Lucroy went on the DL with a broken big left toe suffered last night when a foul ball sharply hit it. Herrera has torn the cover off the ball at Colorado Springs, hitting .422 in eleven games with two homers and nine RBI’s. Centeno was batting .179 for the Sky-Sox with two RBI’s in eight games. Kintzler made only one appearance for Colorado Springs before being put on that team’s DL with a nail issue. He was re-instated from the disabled list earlier today.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost catcher Jonathan Lucroy to a broken toe, and second baseman Scooter Gennett in a freak shower accident and yes, the Brewers lost another game last night, 6-1 at home to Cincinnati. It was a scoreless affair through five innings until the Reds scored four times in the sixth inning and twice more in the seventh — all off Wily Peralta, who struck out five in seven frames and fell to 0-2 on the year. Lucroy broke his big left toe in the sixth inning on a sharp foul ball from Zack Cozart who went on to hit a three-run homer during that at-bat. Lucroy will join Carlos Gomez on the disabled list, and it’s not known how long the All-Star catcher will be out. The Brewers only managed two hits off Reds’ starter Anthony DeSclafini, who struck out five in eight innings and improved to 2-0. The Brewers had their first extra-base hit since Friday night when Adam Lind doubled in the fourth inning. Ryan Braun hit a solo blast in the ninth, ending Milwaukee’s streak of six games without a homer. The Reds broke a four-game losing streak, while the Brewers have dropped six straight to fall to 2-11 on the season. The two teams will play again tonight at Miller Park. Right-hander Mike Fiers starts against Reds’ righty Jason Marquis.
