MANITOWOC, Wis (WSAU-Wheeler News) A Kiel man is free on a signature bond, after appearing in court yesterday for a police confrontation at Monday’s funeral of state trooper Trevor Casper. 56-year old Michael Mangan was charged with a felony count of resisting and injuring an officer — plus misdemeanors of disrupting a funeral, obstructing police, and disorderly conduct.
Mangan missed two court appearances earlier this week in Manitowoc County. He’s scheduled to return on Monday for a formal initial appearance where a judge will make sure the defendant understands the charges.
Prosecutors said Mangan became abusive at officers who were providing security at a private burial service for Casper, who died along with a bank robber in a shootout on Tuesday of last week in Fond du Lac. Authorities said the officers wanted to know about an item sticking out of Mangan’s bag as he was walking past the cemetery — and he later physically resisted when police tried to escort him from the service.
