Historic find made by a Neenah man

NEENAH, WI (WTAQ) - A Neenah man says while working with his metal detector, he found a rare piece of history.

Don Westbrook says last week while searching in the Neenah area, he came across what experts say is an ancient Native American spear tip.

“They are from something called Old Copper Culture and they are from 6,000 B.C. to about 2,000 B.C. probably,” Lawrence University anthropology professor Peter Peregrine told FOX 11.

Peregrine says artifacts like this one were used for weapons or as ceremonial items.

“At first I didn’t realize what it was until I started getting down there… and then when I saw the green patina and the spear tip sticking out I knew exactly what it was and I was pretty excited,” Westbrook told FOX 11.

Experts say thousands of similar artifacts are buried around the region. But they usually go undetected because they're buried deep in the ground.
