Anti-mining "Harvest Camp" moving onto private property

MELLEN, Wis. (WXPR) -- Lac Courte Oreilles Harvest Camp residents are moving onto private land, after the Iron County board ruled that residents were violating a 14-day camping limit.

The camp, also known the Harvest Education and Learning Project, was established a year ago in response to a proposed iron mine. Organizers say their goals include harvesting food and documenting the natural resources in the area.

Spokesperson Paul DeMain says the group wanted to avoid a confrontation, because it has long-term goals for staying in the area.  "While we're moving off the public land for strategic legal purposes - that are actually are part of a strategy and maneuver, because the Lac Courte Oreille tribe is pursuing a permit, a self-regulatory permit which guides civil regulatory authorities over harvest on public lands - and that's part of the battle here." The new site is across the road from the old one.on private land.

The Harvest Camp celebrated its one year anniversary last weekend.
