The 39th WIAA Girls State High School Basketball tournament is underway at the Resch Center and in the opening game, defending Division 5 champion Wisconsin Rapids Assumption rolled over the 2012 state champs from Heritage Christian 61-41. The Royals broke it open with a 21-10 second quarter. Assumption got balanced scoring, led by Brittney Birkhauser with 12. Gena Grundhoffer scored 11 while Mary Sigler and Macie Zurfluh each had 8. Zurfluh also added a state tournament division 5 record 9 assists. Heritage got 21 from Ramiyay Bennett in defeat to finish 20-5 on the year. Assumption improves to 26-2 on the season and will face the winner of Owen-Withee and undefeated Barneveld. The Golden Eagles last lost came in last year's title game against Assumption.
