APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - A pair of Fox Valley police agencies are getting a heavy duty vehicle from the U.S. military.
A Caiman Multi-Theater Vehicle, also known as an MRAP, is being given to the Appleton Police Department and Outagamie County Sheriff's Department. Their application was approved recently by the Law Enforcement Support Office.
The Law Enforcement Support Office is a branch of the Department of Defense that works to distribute surplus military equipment to law enforcement agencies.
The Appleton P.D. say they plan to use the big rig for rescues and evacuations. It will also enable teams of officers to safely move into unsafe situations.
Both agencies are paying nearly $5,000 to have the vehicle brought in from Texas. No word on when the vehicle will be delivered.
Other agencies in Wisconsin, like the Madison Police Department, St. Croix County Sheriff's Department, Pierce County Sheriff's Department and the Juneau County Sheriff's Department have received similar vehicles through the same program.
