ONALASKA, Wis. (WSAU) -- A creek in western Wisconsin is flowing smoothly again after crews removed ice with explosives on Friday.

The Town of Onalaska hired a work crew to blow up the ice blocking the Sand Lake Coulee Creek after some flooding occurred. Ice on the river prevented rain from getting into the creek itself. That water then threatened to flood homes in the area by going around a dike.

Town officials got the okay from the DNR and law enforcement, and then used plastic explosives to shatter the ice for removal. Crews have since cleared out the ice and restored access to the creek for water to flow again.
