GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsinites are enjoying the warmest day of 2014 by far.

It was warmer than expected in much of the Badger State as of 2 p.m. Forecasters had said the 50 degree barrier would only be broken in the southern part of state Monday. But it was 52 at mid-afternoon in two of the state's northern-most cities, Superior and Ashland.

Hayward, which often has the state's coldest readings during the winter, was among the warmest at 54. Land O'Lakes at the state's border with Upper Michigan was at 55.

Boscobel in southwest Wisconsin was the state's warm spot at 2 p.m. with 58 -- about ten degrees warmer than what forecasters predicted for what's supposed to be the warmest day of the week.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse said nearby Rochester Minnesota broke the 40 degree barrier for the first time since last November 30th. That happened just before 9 a.m.

As it stands now, some places in Wisconsin could be 20 degrees colder Tuesday, when a new storm system moves in with rain, sleet, and light snow.

Colder temperatures in the teens and 20's are expected Wednesday before the 40's return on Thursday.
