WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) -- U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin showed her support for a bill to improve healthcare for veterans Monday.

The bill would allow for veterans to have more flexibility with doctors if they live more than 40 miles away from a Veteran’s Affairs facility as well as begin construction on 26 new facilities across 18 states. New doctors and nurses would be hired to cut down on wait times and scheduling would be restructured to improve access.

Accountability of the Department of Veteran Affairs is also targeted with the bill by allowing the VA to more easily remove and replace officials mishandling medical services or underperforming.

Baldwin also supported a similar bill in February that expanded veteran’s benefits.  Senators Bernie Sanders and John McCain presented the current bill that is expected to be voted on this week.
