Madison Dem Brett Hulsey apparently has enough signatures to get on primary ballot

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Brett Hulsey says he has enough nominating signatures to get on the August primary ballot for governor.

The state Assembly Democrat from Madison tells the AP he had around 2,200 signatures as of Monday morning -- and he's gathering more before he's required to file them by 5 p.m.

Hulsey announced a long shot campaign a few weeks ago to run against former Trek Bicycle executive Mary Burke -- who's giving Republican Governor Scott Walker a close race at this point.

Candidates for statewide office must file 2,000 nominating signatures. Many more are often filed, so candidates make sure they have enough to weather any challenges in which signatures might be found invalid.

Burke turned in almost 3,800 signatures last Friday. Walker was expected to turn in his petitions Monday. Other state, county, and congressional candidates have the same filing deadline Monday.
