Gov. Walker says he supports taking steps to prevent outsourcing jobs

WAUWATOSA, WI (WTAQ) - Governor Scott Walker said Monday he will support efforts to prevent Wisconsin companies that outsource jobs from getting tax breaks and other business incentives.

The Republican Walker has made the exporting of jobs a campaign issue, as he criticizes Democrat Mary Burke of profiting from the shipping of Trek Bicycle jobs to China.

Meanwhile, Walker's campaign finance reports show that he has taken campaign gifts from a number of firms that outsource jobs.

Monday, Walker told reporters in Wauwatosa that he generally supports a call from Assembly Democratic leader Peter Barca to stop economic incentives from going to firms that export jobs. Still, he wants to see what Barca proposes first.

Walker said he wants to focus on making Wisconsin "a pro-active state in terms of helping companies grow here -- and for those that outsourced in the past to bring jobs back from other places as they've announced."

Walker made his comments at Briggs and Stratton, which said it would add over 200 jobs at its suburban Milwaukee headquarters after closing a plant in Georgia and consolidating certain operations.
