Two life sentences for Brian Cooper in 2012 murder

STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The man convicted of murdering his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child while visiting Door County will spend the rest of his life in prison.

On Thursday, 37-year-old Brian Cooper received two life sentences without the possibility for parole.

Cooper was convicted during a second trial in May, after the first trial ended with a hung jury.

In 2012, Cooper and 21-year-old Alisha Bromfield attended her sister's wedding at a Door County resort. After rejecting Cooper's romantic advances, he strangled Bromfield. Cooper also sexually assaulted her afterwards.

During the first trial, Cooper successfully argued he was too drunk to have intended to kill Bromfield. That has since led to a state law which eliminates the intoxication defense.
