Snowmobile passenger dies after collision with ice shack

LUCK, Wis. (WXCE) - Another snowmobile rider has been killed, this time in northwestern Wisconsin. The Polk County Sheriff’s Department was called Wednesday night at 10:03 pm after a snowmobile collided with an ice house on Bone Lake west of Luck.

Polk County Sheriff Pete Johnson says the deceased was a passenger and not the driver of the snowmobile.  “What we found is that two snowmobiles were northbound on the lake going between the islands and the shore, when the second of the two snowmobiles either struck or at least sideswiped one of the ice shacks that was out on the lake. The passenger of that snowmobile eventually did pass away.”

The passenger, a 20-year-old female who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash had severe head injuries. While waiting for the ambulance, CPR was initiated at the scene. The victim/passenger died at the scene. The ice shack is owned by Clint Donald of Luck. The striking snowmobile was a 1995 Polaris operated by 21- year-old Nicholas Krenz of St. Croix Falls. Krenz was not injured in the crash and was later arrested at the scene for operating a snowmobile while intoxicated.

Identification of the victim has not been made public.
