Twenty vehicles in chain reaction crash, no serious injuries

KNOWLTON, Wis, (WSAU) -- The northbound lanes of I-39 were closed for nearly four hours Tuesday afternoon after a chain-reaction crash involving about twenty cars and trucks. Lieutenant Sean McCarthy of the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department says it is amazing that no one was seriously hurt in this incident. “No serious injuries. The reports I have, anywhere from one to three minor injuries. Fortunately for us and for the travelers, there were no serious injuries or fatalities.”

The bad weather meant extra time on duty for the officers. McCarthy says they had nearly every officer out on the road dealing with crashes and slide-ins. “We had to hold over all of our day shift deputies, so all of our deputies were out there. We really had double the cars that we normally would in this situation, so a lot of hours out there, a lot of slide-ins, but again, fortunately, nothing major at all.”

McCarthy estimates there were well over 60 separate incidents on the roads in Marathon County during the height of the storm.
