Winter Storm bringing snow and problems

UNDATED (WSAU) -- The powerful winter storm is causing more problems in northwestern Wisconsin than in other places.

the Wausau area was receiving a mixture of sleet and light snow overnight. It will change over to all snow and accumulations could still total 3-7 more inches in this area.

A barn collapsed in Marathon County on Overlook Heights Drive in the Town of Maine. One cow received a broken leg, and the building is a total loss.

There's also a report of a partial roof collapse at a K-Mart in Eau Claire. Police at the scene on Thursday night said the store was open for business at the time of the collapse. A gas line was severed and the store had to be evacuated.

As of 3:30 this morning, Wisconsin Public Service reported about 200 of their customers in Mosinee without power because of downed tree limbs that fell across power lines. There were widespread outages in Chippewa Falls last night. Most of those customers have been restored this morning.

Wisconsin State Patrol reports around 20 road incidents in the Wausau district, with no serious crashes. The Eau Claire post of Wisconsin State Patrol has already dealt with 14 crashes and 28 slide-offs. Forecasters believe this region could get from 7-14 inches of new snow.

The Department of Transportation reports snow covered roads are creating hazardous travel conditions in northwest and northern Wisconsin. Travel is not advised on Highway 8 between Tripoli and Hawkins, Highway 13 between Westboro and Park Falls, and Highway 51 between Manitowish Waters and Hurley. The Wisconsin State Patrol requested Wisconsin National Guard members to check Rest Areas along Hwy 53 from Eau Claire to Rice Lake for any stranded motorists.

To the west, the problems are piling up. In Cameron, there’s six new inches of heavy wet snow. The O’Reilly Auto Parts store in Menominee and the Eau Claire K Mart had roof collapses due to the new heavy snow.

In Ashland, it is much worse. The wind is driving the snow creating white-out conditions. The Weather Channel’s Mike Seidel posted a YouTube video of the blowing snow, seen on the link above.
