BAYFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) -- The winter storm has forced a temporary closure at a huge tourist attraction. The National Park Service has closed the popular Ice Caves at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore near Bayfield.
The weather has dropped several inches of new snow along the north shore, and many areas of the state are difficult to travel in because of the snow and drift covered roads.
The caves had about 21,000 visitors last weekend alone, and about 60,000 since mid January. This is the first year in five people could safely walk on the ice of Lake Superior to see the caves. If the weather clears up and the road conditions improve, National Parks officials expect to reopen the caves as early as Saturday.
