HAYWARD, Wis. (WSAU) -- A snow shortage will not be a problem for this year’s American Birkebeiner cross country ski race. In fact, there may be travel problems for racers going to the annual event.

Wisconsin is expecting a massive snowstorm in most of the state Thursday, and a state of emergency has already been called by Governor Scott Walker. People are being told to do as little travelling as possible, but that message will be unwelcome to skiing enthusiasts that travel from around the world to participate in the Cable to Hayward cross country skiing marathon race.

There will be some changes at this year’s event. The traditional starting point is Telemark Lodge at Cable, but the lodge is closed and the new owner has no immediate plans to reopen it. Race officials have arranged for a hospitality tent at the Telemark Lodge site, and the awards will be given at Hayward’s tent city.

The northwestern part of Wisconsin could get 12-15 inches of snow in the expected storm.

The Birkebeiner is a three-day event starting Thursday, but the big race is Saturday.
