Nominations open for the Leopold Conservation Award

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- A group trying to preserve Aldo Leopold's land ethic is looking for nominees for a conservation award.

The Sand County Foundation has opened applications for the Leopold Conservation Award. President Brent Haglund says his group is trying to foster the Land Ethic that Aldo Leopold wanted the public to have. "Even if people on the farms and ranches of this country who are making the commitment to leaving the land better than they found it haven't read A Sand County Almanac, in many cases they've got that ethic."

“Through this partnership, we have been able to recognize the conservation efforts of outstanding Wisconsin agricultural producers who have built a strong tradition of sustainable agriculture,” says Haglund. “We look forward to honoring more landowners who are committed to the enhancement of Wisconsin’s landscape.”

Haglund says they're looking for people who are trying to make a difference in land conservation. "Whether it's a soil conservation district or a lake district or a private non profit, take the time to nominate these outstanding environmental performers."

Applications can be filled out online and are due by August 1 2014. You can learn more online at http://leopoldconservationaward.org/.
