GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The U.S. Navy announced that the USS Green Bay will join the U.S. 7th Fleet in Sasebo, Japan next year.
The USS Green Bay will replace the USS Denver, the Navy's second-oldest ship on active duty.
Later this year, the USS Denver will be decommissioned; the USS Peleliu will be sent to the region in the meantime until the Green Bay arrives.
In a statement from the U.S. Navy, the USS Green Bay is part of a newer class of ship and is equipped with an advanced command and control suite and can carry more vehicles and cargo. Personnel and equipment can also move on and off the ship faster.
The Navy says the move demonstrates the United States’ commitment to the defense of Japan and the security and stability of the Asia-Pacific region.
