WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wisconsin Public Service wants you to go check your vents.
With the continued heavy snowfall over the last several weeks, WPS customers should be making sure the vents on their furnaces and water heaters are not blocked up. "We're just warning our customers to make sure that they take some time to check that their furnace, hot water heater vents are cleaned out that there's not snow packed up in them." Spokesperson Kelly Zagrzebski says that also includes clearing the area around your gas meter. If customers decide to remove snow from roofs, they should take care not to have it fall in the area of electric or gas meters.
Zagrzebski says it's also a good time to check your dryer vent as well. "Just take a quick check of it, make sure the lint is out of there, and if it happens to be frozen or if there's some ice in there, that you just help to get that cleared out." A spark inside a blocked vent could start a nasty fire.
WPS says it's all just a matter of keeping your house well ventilated to prevent your furnace from cutting out, or the buildup of carbon monoxide or other hazardous gasses. "There's a chance that we could have some improper ventilation, some improper burning of natural gas, so we just really want to make sure those are cleared out and we don't have a safety issue."
