DNR wants hunters to be prepared for new crossbow deer hunt

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- Department of Natural Resources officials are readying hunters for the opening of the new crossbow deer season this year.

DNR wildlife regulations specialist Scott Loomans says the regulations for the license now allows all hunters to get a permit, not just the elderly or disabled. "You need to complete hunters safety to to be eligible for the licenses. You need to be 12 years old, and actually if you're 10 or 11 years old, you do have the option of getting a mentored hunting license as well."

The tags for archery and crossbow deer will be separate as well. "The seasons dates are the same for the archery season, you'll get tags: one buck tag and one farmland zone antlerless tag. So I think it's something that will be familiar." Loomans says hunters will be limited to the one set of tags.

Hunters should also be prepared for the differences in hunting. Loomans says you should take the time to get acquainted with your crossbow. "There are some special safety considerations to be made for getting a crossbow in and out of a tree stand and cocking it, so we want people to study up on what they'll be doing and practice with their crossbows beforehand."

You can find more regulations and guidelines online from the DNR's website.
