APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Lawrence University is reporting the passing of long-time Jazz Studies director Fred Sturm.
According to a news release, Sturm died on Sunday at his De Pere home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 63.
Sturm graduated from Lawrence in 1973 and returned to teach at the private university in Appleton.
He enjoyed a 37-year teaching career, including 26 years as director of jazz studies and improvisational music at Lawrence.
Sturm earned a 1997 Grammy Award nomination and was awarded the 2003 ASCAP/IAJE Commission in Honor of Quincy Jones, a prize granted annually to one jazz composer of international prominence.
Lawrence University will host a public memorial celebrating Sturm's life at a later date.
