Senator Baldwin urges President Obama to stand up to China on trade issues

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) -- Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin is urging President Obama to stand up to China for American businesses. The Wisconsin Democrat sent a letter to Obama urging him to hold China accountable for currency manipulation, which she claims is giving Chinese businesses an unfair advantage over businesses here in the U.S.

Baldwin cites a U.S. Department of Treasury report on International Economic and Exchange Rate Policies that failed to name China as a currency manipulator even though she says there is clear evidence they are doing this. She says, “I have seen the effects of Chinese currency manipulation first hand in Wisconsin. It takes the form of lost jobs, closed factories, and stagnant wages. After a decade in which we lost millions of manufacturing jobs, the time for handling China with kid gloves is over.” Baldwin wants the U.S. Department of Commerce to expand the definition of ‘anti-dumping’ to include workplace safety and environmental sustainability to level the playing field so American businesses can compete fairly.
