Transparency crucial to stay ahead in fracking

MIDDLETON, Wis. (WSAU) -- An energy consultant says Wisconsin can remain the leading supplier of sand for the nation's fracking boom.

State regulators and fracking companies have to commit to maximum transparency to help minimize controversies between companies and environmentalists. That’s according to consultant and former US Environmental Protection Agency staffer J. Winston Porter. Porter believes responding quickly to concerns and being open with information will be key in keeping Wisconsin ahead.

Fracking is a process in which sand, water and chemicals are injected deep underground to release oil and gas. The Department of Natural Resources says there are currently 135 producers in Wisconsin contributing to fracking including 63 sand mines and 45 processing plants.
