UNDATED (WSAU) -- The fall election field is already getting crowded in some races.
The 3rd Congressional District now held by Democrat Ron Kind of La Crosse will definitely have a Republican primary election, as four people wish to oppose the incumbent.
Tony Kurtz of Prairie Du Chien entered the race Wednesday at an Eau Claire event. Chris Anderson is a former aide to Senator Ron Johnson. He announced his candidacy in March. Former Mauston City Council member Ken Van Doren is in the race. Karen Mueller of Chippewa Falls announced her candidacy at the 3rd District Republican Caucus at La Crosse in early March.
Kind issued a statement, saying campaigns start too early and cost too much. He says that he's focused on representing the values and interests of his constituents, and not campaign politics.
Kind has been in Congress since 1997.
The district extends from the Illinois border along the Mississippi River and St. Croix River north to River Falls, Eau Claire, and Chippewa Falls, with some of the district extending to cover Sand Creek and Ridgeland. Redistricting also included a thin strip of territory through parts of Juneau, Adams, Wood, and Portage Counties. The last redistricting placed Nekoosa, Wisconsin Rapids, and Stevens Point in the 3rd District.
