It's now legal for Wisconsinites to buy long guns and rifles from far away states

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wisconsinites no longer have a restriction prohibiting them from buying long guns and rifles from far away states. Governor Scott Walker signed Assembly Bill 368 into law Tuesday, which takes away the restriction that has been in place since a 1986 federal law.

Representative John Spiros says Wisconsin could have changed state law to deal with the federal issue in 1986 but didn’t.  “In the past, you could only purchase a long gun, rifle, or shotgun in a contiguous state, being Minnesota, or Iowa, or Illinois, or Michigan. What this bill does is allows for you to go outside those states and to purchase a long gun or rifle.”

Spiros says this new law allows Wisconsinites to have the same ability to shop around the country as 40 other states.  “We basically changed the law to allow our residents, our hunters, those sportsmen to be able to do that, so it gives them a larger opportunity, as far as looking around, and finding something outside the state if they need to.”

Spiros says this law does not change the rules for obtaining long guns and rifles, it simply provides a greater variety of longs guns, rifles and retailers to choose from.
