CDL drivers need to comply with new rules

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - Truck drivers and bus operators will want to make sure to follow a new federal rule. As of January 30th, 2014, commercial driver’s license holders will be required comply with the new rules. The DMV’s Driver Qualification Chief Alison Lebwohl says there are two things the federal government now requires. “Drivers do need to let the DMV know whether they drive in interstate commerce or intrastate, and they need to let us know whether they’re required to carry a federal medical certificate, also known as a fed med card.”

Lebwohl says other regulations and CDL qualifications are the same as before. She says interstate drivers already have the fed med card, but keeping a copy in the truck or bus is no longer the only place that’s required. “For those drivers who are driving interstate, and are required to carry a fed med card, they need to keep a current copy of that fed med card on file with the DMV.” She says you still have to keep on with you in the vehicle, too.

Lebwohl says they don’t want anyone surprised by the changes, and urges truckers and bus drivers to take about ten minutes online to upload their information by computer or smartphone. A legible smartphone photo of the fed med card is acceptable. You can also use form MV3230 and use traditional mail or fax machine if you prefer. Employers may also use the Public Abstract Record System available online.

Failing to submit the information will result in losing your commercial driver’s license

The website www.cdl.wi.gov has the online application. More information about the rule changes can be found at www.wisconsindmv.gov .
