More state public schools exceed expectations in report card findings

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - More of Wisconsin's public schools exceeded the state's performance expectations this year than last.

That's according to the second annual school report cards released Tuesday by the state Department of Public Instruction.

88 percent of the state's 1,910 individual schools met or exceeded the state's performance standards. That's 2 percent higher than a year ago.

Only 58 schools received the lowest possible rating, failing to meet expectations. That represents three percent of all public school buildings, down from 3.5 percent that were deficient a year ago.

Also, the state issued district-wide report cards for the first time.

All but 11 of Wisconsin's 424 public school systems met or exceeded expectations. The Milwaukee Public Schools was the only system failing to meet expectations.

State officials cautioned that year to year comparisons might not be possible for individual schools, because of new calculating methods in the new report cards.
