ST LOUIS, MO (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers avoided a sweep in St. Louis on Sunday, taking a pitcher’s dual 2-1 over their Central Division rivals.
Jhoulys Chacín came out pitching like an ace en route to his 13th win of the season. The Venezuela native threw 6 strong innings, scattering four hits and allowing no runs. Chacín was also efficient with his pitches, throwing 82 in the outing (62 for strikes).
Jeremy Jeffress allowed one run on one hit in the 7th to record a hold. The save went to Josh Hader who recorded a perfect 9th.
Both Brewers runs came off the bat of former Kansas City Royal Mike Moustakas in the 3rd inning when he laced a two-RBI double to right field with two outs in the inning. It was the only hit of the game for Moustakas, and the only extra base hit of the game for the Brewers.
Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain also added singles in the win.
With the win, Milwaukee jumps back into a very wild NL Wild Card picture with a record of 69-57. Entering play Sunday, five clubs were sitting tied atop the Wild Card standings with Milwaukee a half-game back. Adding to the madness was tied atop the NL East and West divisions between the Phillies, Braves, Rockies, and Diamondbacks.
Milwaukee opens a series with the Cinncinatti Reds tonight at Miller Park.
Chase Anderson (7-7) will get the start for the Brewers. The Reds will turn to Homer Bailey.
