St. John's Homeless Shelter gets recommendation to serve more people

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) -  Green Bay’s Plan Commission gave it’s thumbs up to St. John’s the Evangelist Homeless Shelter in downtown to increase its bed limit by 20 people to 84.

Over the past winter, the city cited the shelter for being over its capacity of 64 residents.

The issue turned into a larger conversation about the city’s homeless population.

The shelter always felt they were within city code, because their permit includes an overflow plan that allowed them to serve up to 84 people.

Shelter board President and Catholic Diocese of Green Bay Deacon Tim Reilly says it was a disagreement, but is happy with the commission’s recommendation because it takes away the ambiguity.

City planning staff sought denial of the request because of increased police calls and the neighborhood density threshold.

The city council has the final say.
