DNR issues too many antlerless tags for parts of Vilas County

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - The DNR is asking hunters in two northern deer units to return some doe tags after they accidentally sold too many.

Wildlife management director Tom Hauge says they accidentally oversold permits for for DMUs 35 and 36. "It was brought to our attention that the permit numbers that were listed as available were actually higher than the numbers approved back in May." Those two zones cover the eastern half of Vilas County and parts of Oneida and Forest Counties.

Hauge says about 350 extra tags were sold. "We actually ended up overselling in 35 by 288 permits and in 36 by 67 permits."

Since those antlerless tags are sold on a first-come first-served basis, state officials have contacted all of the people who purchased tags after the quota was sold, asking for them back. "We've sent letters to everyone and requested they return their permits. When we get those permits back, we'll issue refunds."

Hauge says they can't actually demand the permits back. "I don't think we can, from a legal perspective, make them invalid. By and large, the vast majority of people we've contacted have understood the situation and have indicated they will return the permits." If you have been contacted by the DNR, you can send back the permit in the envelope provided.
