What are other possible sites besides downtown Green Bay for Walmart?

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - What are the possible other sites for a new Walmart store that were pitched by Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt to corporate officials on Thursday.

Schmitt touted their interest in other sites but wouldn’t disclose where exactly the sites are.  Schmitt did say there are two along Velp Avenue, and mentioned a third one that is east of Military Avenue but close to the Ashland and Broadway Avenue areas.

Walmart needs a minimum 11 acre site for its proposed 150,000 sq/ft store.

Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Economic Development Fred Monique says there are two possible sites on the west side of downtown that are blocks from the Broadway District, where Walmart is currently pursuing and has a purchase option.

One is the former Canadian National railroad switchyard near West Mason and Ashland.  The other is along the riverfront in the 600 block of South Broadway.

Monique says there are a handful of other sites along Velp and Military Avenue.

Walmart uses 3rd party site selectors to find ideal locations for new stores, which was the case with the old Larson cannery site along North Broadway.

Monique says if the site selector evaluated all other possible sites around the city and felt the downtown location was the best site, then it’s highly unlikely that Walmart will change its mind.

Schmitt says Walmart will look at and research the alternative sites, but the retailer will continue to pursue the downtown location.  Schmitt also said they are not interested in building a smaller store.
