MADISON (WRN)  The State Supreme Court hears arguments today (Wednesday) on whether Wisconsin's domestic partnership registry is unconstitutional.

Several board members of Wisconsin Family Action challenged the registry, which was created through the 2009 state budget. Executive Vice President James Maillette says they believe the registry violates a state Constitutional ban on gay marriage or the creation of a similar status.

But attorney Christopher Clark, who represents several of the equality groups defending the registry, says it only grants a portion of the rights offered by marriage.

A Dane County judge ruled the registry does not violate the Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, a decision that was later upheld by an appeals court. It could be several months before the state Supreme Court releases a ruling in the case. The high court will arguments in the case later this afternoon, scheduled for 1:30pm.
