EAU CLAIRE, WI (WTAQ) - A new study shows the number of disease-carrying ticks have gone up, prompting the Wisconsin Department of Health to remind people to stay protected.

The 2010-2013 study from UW-Eau Claire shows about 35 percent of ticks collected in 21 counties tested positive for Lyme disease.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health says the spike is due to the expanding tick population.

The department is specifically warning hunters to stay protected, check for ticks regularly and shower after being outside.
