Coach McCarthy: Packers players must "step up"

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Packers' coach Mike McCarthy says it's time for his players to step up, focus on winning, and stop worrying about who's not there.

McCarthy said Monday afternoon that the Packers' inability to produce in the fourth quarter has been a recurring problem -- and it's the one that he talked vaguely about Sunday when he said he would have something to fix Monday.

The coach admitted he couldn't fix anything right now.

The Packers have lost quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Seneca Wallace to injuries the past two games -- but third-stringer Scott Tolzien threw for 280 yards in his NFL debut in Sunday's home loss to Philadelphia, and he's been named the starter for Sunday's game against the Giants at New York.

McCarthy said he'd work on Tolzien's footwork this week, but he said he did some things exceptionally well against the Eagles.

Many pundits have said the problem Sunday was the defense. McCarthy said there was poor tackling -- and it will be a heightened priority at practice this week.

He said the Packers have a had a lot of injuries, but they had a chance to overcome them Sunday and didn't.
