Mayor Schmitt courting Whole Foods to come to Green Bay

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt is trying to court other major grocery stores to possibly locate in the downtown or elsewhere in Titletown.

Schmitt says representatives from Whole Foods toured sites earlier this week.

Whole Foods is high on his wish list and believes they could be successful here.

"Green Bay, you look at Cabela's, and the VA clinic, and Schreiber and the many things - Costco - that have taken place lately. This is a great community for people to maybe step it up a little bit. And Whole Foods is vetting Wisconsin right now and we wanted to showcase Green Bay," Schmitt told Fox 11.

Schmitt says they collected market data and will follow up in a week or two.

Schmitt is against a 150,000 sq ft Walmart in downtown, but is open to something smaller.

Walmart reps and Schmitt met a couple weeks ago and were supposed to meet again this week. \ But the big box retailer requested to meet again in a couple more weeks in order to go over its analysis and design plans.

"You know, they may be taking a little bit more time. But I think that it is positive and I think they really took our conversation serious,” Schmitt told Fox 11.

Across the river, the New Leaf Maket co-op continues on it's path to open a store sometime next year along Main Street on the site of the Greyhound Lines bus depot. They are currently working on a capital campaign for the more than $6 million project.
