F-A-A Continues Its Investigation Following Superior Mid-Air Collision

National Transportation Safety Board
National Transportation Safety Board

Duluth, MN (KDAL) - The investigation continues after two skydiving planes collided in mid-air over Superior Saturday evening.

None of the nine skydivers or the two pilots were seriously hurt after the collision, which caused one of the planes to break-up, scattering debris and wreckage from the Douglas County Fairgrounds to South Superior.

Several witnesses told first arriving firefighters that the plane lost both wings and the fuselage became a “fiery ball streaking toward the ground, extinguishing itself just before impact.”  The pilot, using a parachute, was able to jump from the disintegrating airplane to safety.

On the ground, a waitress who was working at the time at a restaurant near the Richard I. Bong Airport told K-D-A-L News she heard a loud boom then saw debris falling to the ground and small flames.

The pilot of the other plane was able to land safely.
