UPDATE: Minocqua 7th grader falls short in National Geographic Bee

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - A Minocqua 7th-grader fell short Wednesday of winning one of the top two spots in the National Geographic Bee.

13-year-old Asha Jain was among 10 finalists competing in Washington.

The winner was 12-year-old Sathwik Karnik of Plainville Massachusetts. He correctly identified Chimborazo as the mountain in Ecuador that’s the farthest point from the center of the Earth.

Sathwik led throughout the final round Wednesday morning. 13-year-old Conrad Oberhaus of Lincolnshire Illinois placed 2nd.

Asha Jain won her state competition, and then advanced after Monday’s preliminary round. Her brother Vansh had finished second in the national bee a year ago.

For taking first, Sathwik won a $25,000 college scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos Islands, and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.
