MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - There’s more trouble for Wisconsin’s job creation agency.
John Gillespie, who was hired in April to help the troubled Economic Development Corporation clean up its image, resigned Monday after personal tax troubles came to light.
WKOW-TV of Madison said Gillespie owes $36,000 in back taxes to the state. Also, officials filed a warrant against him in Outagamie County last year, because he owed almost $8,000 in unemployment benefits he received improperly.
The news comes less than a week after a stinging audit which showed that the WEDC broke state laws by adopting certain policies, and improperly handled state grants to businesses for creating jobs.
Gillespie did not comment.
Both the governor’s office and the economic development agency told WKOW they did not know about Gillespie’s tax debts until the station brought them.
Gillespie is listed on the Revenue Department’s “Web Site of Shame” for his tax debt – and his address is listed as Shoreline Washington.
