Expect better maple syrup season, say producers

UNDATED (WSAU) - Cooler conditions this year have improved the maple syrup outlook for 2013.

The syrup flows the best when daytime highs are in the low 40s and nighttime lows are in the 20s. Highs in the 60s last March caused the sap to stop flowing once leaves started to bud. The sap-collecting season usually runs from mid-March to mid-April. Producers say this year’s temperatures and conditions should mean production will return to normal levels.

A producer in Holcombe says he expects to make 200 gallons of syrup this year, compared to only 15 gallons last year.
