Delay granted in Brian Cooper's murder trial

STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A defense motion to delay Brian Cooper's murder trial in Door County was granted by a judge Monday.

Cooper is charged with the murder of Alisha Bromfield at a resort they were staying at. Police say Bromfield, who was pregnant, wanted to end their relationship. Cooper wasn't the child's father.

Cooper was supposed to stand trial on April 8. But Defense attorney Shane Brabazon requested the delay, saying he needed more time to get expert witnesses, according to online court records. Prosecutors and Bromfield's parents requested that the trial date remain in place.

Judge Todd Ehlers granted the request for a delay, with the new trial date of June 17. Jury selection will be held June 14. A jury from outside Door County will hear the case.

Cooper pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of third-degree sexual assault.
